 \hskip 10pt

The first of a short series of talks on Computers will be given on the
second day out from Honolulu. The talks will be given by Arthur L.
Samuel. Professor Samuel has a personal computer with him and he will be
able to demonstrate its use and even provide some personallized
instruction in its use for those who are interested.

The talks will be quite informal with the range of matters to be covered,
the total number of talks and their general level to depend upon the
specific interests of the audience.

Professor Samuel is an Adjunct Professor of Computer Science at Stanford
University, and has frequently lectured to lay audiences on the subject of
computers and computing. He has the unusual background of having been
intimentely associated with the development of computers and computing for
sixty years.

One of our fellow passengers, Arthur Samuel, has agreed to give a short
series of talks about computers during some of the at-sea days of our
cruise. The talks will be quite informal with plenty of time allowed for
questions and for general discussions.

\hskip 12pt
Professor Samuel has a Personal Computer on board that he will be able to
demonstrate. He might even let you try your hand at using this computer
if, as he puts it, you flatter his ego by listening to him talk on his
favorite subject.

\hskip 12pt
It will help in planning these talks if you will indicate your interests by checking
the appropiate boxes below.

\ \squareb {\ }\hskip 10pt I would like to attend at least one talk on the
general subject of computers.

\ \squareb {\ }\hskip 10pt I would like to know as much about the
principles underlying the modern digital computer as Lady Lovelace did in
early Victorian times.

\ \squareb {\ }\hskip 10pt I would like to know why I should buy a
personal computer and when would be the right time to buy it.

\ \squareb {\ }\hskip 10pt I am not the least interested in learning how to
program but I would like to be able to use a Personal Computer for some
simple tasks.

\ \squareb {\ }\hskip 10pt I would like to understand the elements of
programming.

\ \squareb {\ }\hskip 10pt I would like to know how to write programs in Basic.

\ \squareb {\ }\hskip 10pt I would like to know how to write programs in Pascal.

\ \squareb {\ }\hskip 10pt I would like to know how to program using the Macro
Assembler.

\ \squareb {\ }\hskip 10pt I already know something about computers but I would
like to attend and perhaps heckle the speaker when I disagree with what he
has to say.

\ \squareb {\ }\hskip 10pt I am a computer expert and I would be willing to
talk on my own computer specialty at one of the sessions.

\ \squareb {\ }\hskip 10pt I would like to know enough to decide which personal
computer to buy, from among the 200 or 300 computers that are on the
market.

\ \squareb {\ }\hskip 10pt I already own a PC but I would like some additional
instruction in how to use it.

\ \squareb {\ }\hskip 10pt I would like to know which programs to buy, from among
the 1500 programs that are available for a typical home computer.
